When we talk of skin care we immediately think of the face, but, what of the rest of the body? We often spend hours trying to make our face glow and treat the rest of our bodies like it doesn't matter. We cover up most of the time so we believe that because others aren't seeing it, it is not important. Having beautiful skin all over makes the woman feel beautiful. In this hub I am talking about both facial skin care and body skin care.
A few years ago I did some beauty courses with a couple cosmetic companies. The one I remember most is with Avon. I was an Avon sales rep who wanted to specialize in skin care products, so I did some courses. As I remember it, skin care is not limited to the face it also extends to the hair, feet and the rest of the body.
In this article I am focusing on the body, not the feet, face or hair, just the skin where we cover and pay little attention.

The Well Known Secrets
Shower or Bath?
Why? What does it matter?
It matters. There is a difference as we all know but why, how and when we take a bath or shower can produce different results.
Bath
It's approaching winter and the time when you stock up on lotions and moisturizers because your skin starts to dry out. Many people have never taken a bath while some see it as wasting water. Well let me tell you that a bath maybe the best thing you can do for your skin during the winter months. And you may ask, why not a shower? A shower washes away dirt and debris but it also washes away essential oils from your skin thus drying it out more easily. A hot shower will do that. The difference with a bath, though hot/warm is that you can add essential oils. When you take a soak the skin softens again and it's easier to exfoliate and replenish with the oils from the bath.
Never use soap in your bath. If you have a soap free foam that's fine. Soap lifts away dirt but it also lifts away oil and dry out your skin. Your bath should consist of essential oils and bath salts. You really don't need anything else in your bath. You don't have to use a bubble bath. The bath salts will help to lift away dirt.....by the way how much dirt does your skin have anyway?!
If you don't have or can't afford bath or essential oils use olive oil. Olive oil is rich in anti oxidants and is a very powerful moisturizer.
Your bath water should not be hot but comfortably warm. Soak for no more than 20 minutes or until it becomes luke-warm. Never wait until the water is cold.
Never use an abrasive material in the bath. Your skin has softened so it is better to use a soft cloth or sponge to exfoliate. This is a good time to pay attention to your feet!
No Bath? No Problem - Winter
Can't take a bath in the winter? No problem. Take a very quick warm shower. Don't lather too much. When you get out of the shower, DO NOT towel dry. Apply olive oil to wet skin. You will be surprised how soft your skin feels.
Shower - for summer.
During the warmer months you can take your shower all you want. During the heat your skin loses a lot of fluid and oils BUT the upside is that your skin produces more oils than it actually loses. The amount it keeps or loses all depend on you.
While you do wish to wash away dirt, debris and dead skin cells you must keep in mind that you need to retain some of the natural oils found in the skin. Taking a short cool shower might be the best thing for your skin during the warmer months. Using a moisturizing wash or foam (I still say stay away from soap) keep the shower short and brisk. This is the time to use an abrasive cloth like a shower pouf, loufa or other exfoliating material to help lift away dead skin cells.
After Bath or Shower
Pat dry or air dry. Don't ever rub your skin dry as this action will only serve to further dry out and irritate your skin. For best moisturizing apply body oil to damp skin just after taking a bath or shower. For many it is not necessary to moisturize after shower during the warm months.

Hey RealHousewife. Now you do realize where you went wrong with the dry legs...lol.
When in the bath you are soaking for 20 or so minutes you don't need the extra abrasion because you are already softening whatever debris or dead skin cells that need to be removed. A soft cloth or sponge will do the trick. Keep the loofah for the shower. Try it my way and see the difference. The next trick is to apply the oil to the wet or damp skin.
Hi Cardisa,
Very good advice..thank you..will try to remember all these tips..really good..
Sunnie
I've never liked showering. I find the water is hard and I can't move to far away from the spray because I must stay on the mat as I have bad balance. It's a big hassle. I wash my hair in the kitchen sink, not the shower.
Thank Sunnie. I hope my tips help especially during the winter.
Flora, I personally prefer a bath, but living in Jamaica most of the year it's pretty hot so cool showers are best.
About balance, Green Lotus just did a hub on how to improve balance, you should check it out.
Hi, I love my bath! lol what I usually do is use bubble bath, but then when I stand up to get out I always shower away the dirt, because I believe that the dirty water clings to you, so bath, shower and then rub loads of olive oil in! never sit in the sun afterwards though, with lots of oil on, you will end up barbequed! lol great info, and I will try to stop using to much soap, my legs are a mess!
Nell, after taking a bath you should be better moisturized not suffering, so there is something you must be doing wrong. Try not using so much soap or use a soap free foam. Soap dries out the skin so I think that's where you are going wrong. Going out in the sun after "olive oiling" make you turn into chips!...lol
I love this! I really like taking a warm bath even in the summer. Normally, I just add some epsom salt and lavender oil to it, but these things you recommend sound great too. :)
Thanks OM, Epsom salts is good for detoxing and relaxation.
Hi, yep, chips, just need the vinegar! ha ha
lol....I like vinegar and pepper too...lol
Great tips! Now that cooler weather is on the way, I'll remember those shower vs bath facts. You're so right when you say that we should consider the health and beauty of our skin, beyond our face :)
Great tips Cardisa. I use Olive oil on my skin and hair. I think i'll try the Dove cream oil. Thank you......
Hi Green Lotus. Thanks for stopping by! I totally forgot to mention oil gels and whipped oils. Whipped oils are lighter and more suited for warmer temperatures but still very good for winter.
Hi Ruby, I love dove but expensive here in Jamaica. I find that I can use my olive oil for almost any thing so it works out cheaper.
This hub really rocks.Truly awesome.Great products.Thanks for sharing :)
Thank you Diana. I visited you blog and was impressed too. Thanks for stopping by.

This is a great Hub! I didn't know that you should only shower during the warm months. I'll keep this in mind.
Thanks Alecia. Taking a cool shower during the warmer months will keep you cooler and save on electricity too!
Cardisa , I can't help it I've got to comment . I once took a bath and didn't like it .............he :-} he:-} But I voted awesome because of the visions !
Ahorseback, I can't believe you read this! I am imagining you taking a bath and boy is it funny....lol
maybe my romance story is a better read!
Dear Cardisa, Do you not have skin care treatment for men ? I found myself jealous of your this hub. Really the caring woman you are. I appreciate your work in this field.
I love a good soak but all I have now is a shower. When we added a larger bath to this old farm house we didn't add a tub. Big mistake.
My husband always says a bath just means your soaking in your own dirt.
I have such dry skin I need that bath and winter months here are terrible, really add to dry skin.
Enjoyed your hub.
AUPADHYAY, I suggest the same skin care rules for men. You would be surprised at the results you get. Men tend to ignore such things until it get really bad.
Hi Moonlake, no bath, no problem. Take a quick warm shower. When you get out don't towel dry (except for those areas you have to). Apply olive oil to wet skin.
I have problem with my veins, anyone have some suggestion how to gain normal veins back? I've ruined them , about one and a half year ago, when I was doing cocaine and heroin ... :( I really do need them back... If someone has an answer, and have a great heart and want to help me - send me as an "contact" mail some suggestion. Thank you all ahead, and really really nicely written hub. I am not "just like that" follower of Yours. :)
Lafamillia, if I get any info that can help you, I'll send to you.

Cardisa - I love soaking in the tub. I swear I didn't get one stretch mark through all three kids. I used oil in the bath water to soften and make my skin more elastic. I didn't realize I shouldn't use soap in the tub - no wonder my legs are so dry - or could it be the loofah on top of that?lol. Gosh - Ive been bathing all wrong! Thanks for helping me out:)
