SEO: Using Tags and Keywords For Google Traffic
86
What is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. This simply means a way of getting more traffic to your site naturally or freely or organically. In other words making your site stand out enough to get audience/traffic without actually paying for it.
SEO is simply internet marketing by figuring out what people are looking for and what seach terms they use when searching the internet.
Search terms or search phrases are known as keywords. These are what people type in the search box when looking for something on the net.
Using Tags and Keywords
Did you know that Google also crawls your HubPages profile page? Make your HP profile page stand out in the search engines by writing a description of the content you offer on your website. Your Account is now a Subdomain which means it stand alone in the world wide web. It does not depend on HubPages anymore for ranking in Google. You in turn have to make your site visible by doing all you can to stand out and get traffic to your site by using "seo" tips to do so. These tips include using keywords and tags to do the job.
If you are not a HubPagges member and you have your own website or blog the same rules apply. For the website owner, you need to get your homepage to stand out as do the rest of your site. Follow the same rules for title, description tags and images.
Bloggers must also follow the same rules. Your description meta tags are what will make your blog stand out among all the other blogs. The same rules apply for title, images and content.
HubPages members, your profile page is now your home page and that is what will sell your site. Your meta description tag should be no longer than 154 Characters, this is according to BuiltWith.com, a website that offers analysis of your site's visibility on the web. Its tests will include meta tag uses, home page and title, keyword and images. They will tell you where you have gone wrong and what to do. The basic service is free but you can upgrade for a fee.

Making your Title Google friendly
According to Google your ideal title should be no more than 67 characters long. A title that is too long may send up red flags and Google might think it spam.
The basis of your content should also be included in your title, for example, you write an article describing the color of a leaf, your title should contain the color you are describing and the type of leaf. At title like this: Why the leaf of the Oak turns Red. That title states the color, type of leaf and also tells you that the content is informative and Google likes that. Don't deceive with your title, it should state exactly what is inside the content. One good way to ensure a good title is to write your content first then reading it to yourself, this will give you an idea which keywords to use.
Make sure all the pages in your subdomain contain a unique title, they should not be repeated, HP helps with this as their system tells you that the title is taken when creating a new hub. But you also need to make sure the tiles are distinct as a letter could make the difference. Eg. The Blue House on the Hill, OR, Tne Blue House on the Hill . HP might not realize that the difference is a spelling error so it's good to remember all your titles and make them as unique as possible.
Your title should not contain more than one single letter phrase, eg. "I ate a big pie and a bun with a soda today". Titles like that are ranked very low.

seo tricks
Google likes informative content. That is not to say your Poetry or Humor articles won't be crawled but articles that focus on "How to" will generally get better page ranks. Articles like these will include Science, Technology, Health, Finance, Family and Parenting etc.
When writing your article remember to use phrases and words that will be picked up by the search engine when someone searches for your article. These are the key-phrases or keywords. Don't over-stuff your content though as Google does not like that and may spam you.
Use relevant tags for your content. The HP system will generate a number of tags to assist you but not all of them will be relevant. Imagine searching for "Black dogs for pets" in Google and you are brought to an article about a cat that was chased by a black dog. The author may have used the "black dog pet" tag, but the article was not about the black dog for pet. In other words, use your tags wisely and you are on your way to getting search engine friendly.
Your content must also be relevant to the title. It makes no sense having a search friendly title with content that does not relate to it. Google will put your article in the spam box and your traffic will suffer. The most important key-phrases in your content should also be tagged on your title.
The less grammatical errors you have the more likely your content will be liked by readers. So use a grammar checker to ensure as little error as possible.
Photos for content
Images are great for articles. They give your article a professional look and they make the article more interesting. The more original the photo, the better. Get a camera and take your own photos. if you are writing an article on something technical that requires professional photos then do your research well. Use photos that are not widely used on the internet. If you have to use a commonly used photo make sure it a not copyrighted material. It is wise to name your source and place a note in the caption. Image infringement is a very serious offense and many of us do not really understand this. Watermarked photos are absolutely prohibited.
Placing relevant tags on your photos are easy. Your source, URL and caption should be used adequately to place your tags. The search engine will pick up these tags so where the content falls short the photos make up. The more tags the better, just make sure they are relevant and not over done.

Another thank you here. So far I have been amazed, I have typed in searches and had my own stuff come up and although I don't have ads I hope to get known for when I do get something going (I have plenty written and much taken down from here...hundreds of articles stories and poems) and my profile is something I have never given a thought to!
Hi Cardisa! Great hub and thanks for taking the time to educate us! Voted up, up and away!

I don't think I will do this with my hubpage url because I can't decide what to say but your hub is excellent voted it up.
Great advice! I'm going to have to make some changes to my homepage.
Hey Cardisa,Sumfest was awesome even though RKelly didn't show it still a great time. My friends are still there they stayed to go to ati, which I think is a little too young for me but they're having a ball.
Blessings!
Fabulous tips, Cardissa. And thanks for encouraging people to use their own images! I also suggest adding a note to encourage everyone to use any images that they did not create legally. It might not have a direct SEO impact, but copyright is a very important issue :D
GOOD STUFF, CARDISA! WILL USE YOUR INFO!
Very valuable, especially when we are writing online. Thanks for this useful hub.
Great information! Thanks a lot for the advice and tips.
Thanks,
Some really useful information. Good to know this particularly with the recent changes to subdomains.
Very useful information here for the beginner, thanks. I must go back now and have a look at my profile page, I think it will need to be changed.
Great hub!
I definitely learned a few things.
Good hub.
Very informative article! I'm new to hubpages, and this is just the type of help I was looking for! Much appriciated!
You have made some excellent points here, I don't normally worry about such things. But that said there is little point writing to a public audience if they can't find your articles. Very good advice.
Thanks much for this really helpful info on tags and keywords.
Really great article. If we get bad weather I am going to read up on SEO. I haven't concurred that part of hubbng yet and I need to get into it. Thanks for wirting this article it is infomrative....JT
Hi Cardisa,
There is a fever that comes when there is a hurricane on its way. Whether it hits us or not, I can't say. Thos ethings can turn at the last minute as you well know. Right now I m at my laptop and I am typing this note to you ad the neighbor is putting up boards over his windows. So I thought it turned away from us over night but the people on the block still think it is coming. I have to check the Miami Hurricane Weather Center. I have hurricne shutters on my windows so if we are hit the shutter close automatically. Not that hurricane shutters are any guarantee.
Will keep you posted. Besides the beautiful beaches, the wonderful nature of Floridians and people in the Carribean why do we put ourselves through this every year? We play the pin in a bowling game 6 months out of the year. But I love the people down this way so no compliants. I am just not wild about hurricane season.

I was wondering how the new sub domains would affect our positioning in the search engine. One question I still have is do subdomains carry the same PR of the main domain? For example, is a link from XXXXX.hubpages.com carry the same link juice as just hubpages.com?
Hi Cardisa,
Looks like we will only get a little but of wind and rain in Florida, Thank Goodness. It will pass us tomorrow.
When my subdomain changed all of my adsense accounts disappeared from the google adsense page. Did that happen to you as well? I have almost 150 hubs and it is going to take me some time to put all those accounts back onto adsense, generate new codes, and repaste them all into the hubs.
This question is probably one for the forums but I thought I would run it by you and see if you knew what happened.
All My Best,
JT
Great advice! I'm going to have to make some changes to my homepage.http://www.ommrudraksha.com/products/115-6-mukhi-r
Thankyou Cardisa for an informative and hopefully very useful page. I will certainly try to follow some of the tips, and visit BuiltWith.com which you mention. Hope it makes a difference to the woefull number of visits my pages generally receive each day!
Thanks Cardisa! I just received conditional approval from AdSense and was heading over to improve my profile and write more summaries. I stopped to read your hub before leaving for a few hours and find it is EXACTLY what I need. It is as if you brought this hub to my eyes on purpose! Thank you, as always.
Thanks Cardisa for a great Hub. I know I have to update my profile and I have been working on updating some of my Hubs as well. Your advice in this Hub will be valuable in this process as I will be incorporating your suggestions about titles and tags.
I just noticed that when we click on our account tab and see a list of our Hubs that HubPages has now started flagging Hubs that do not have a summary statement with the letter 'A'. This will be a big help in identifying these Hubs so we can write a summary. According to the HubPages team summaries are also a good way to get noticed by Google.
I have bookmarked your Hub and plan to return to it regularly for ideas. Thanks
Voted up and useful. What an informative article. You really made some excellent points. I think I need to go back and re-write my profile and be more mindful of my titles in the future as well. Thanks Cardisa!
Rather informative. Funny, how just in reading I realized that the key words "how to" are not in my tags. Now it s time to work on my home page
I would be interested in knowing what other peoples results are. http://www.ommrudraksha.com/category/60-rudraksha-

Your hub is great for any hubber or blogger trying to learn a thing or two about the Subdomain change. I will be sharing this with fellow writers and followers. Great hub!
P
Excellent hub! After reading your hub, I immediately went to my hubs and started making changes. Some of the changes I made included changing my titles, shortening my titles as much as possible, and adding the how to element to my titles. I will also work on my profile. I was making the changes on my hubs when I realized I had not thanked you for your hub. So Thanks! Voted up and useful.

Good hub. Makes me think and review my hubs to see how I can make them better. Thanks.
Thanks for this Cardisa. I'm not sure if its good or bad all of us having our own domains now? Good tip about the summaries and tagging. Another useful site is GooglePageRank.
Thanks so much for all this good info Cardisa. I will put it to work for me:)
Cardisa,
as an Network Administrator I can say that I am pleased what I've have seen here written. I know very good what Search Engine Optimization is and how important it is. It is basically everything what you've said, and you could put the title "Everything You Need is good S.E.O".Hmm, maybe I will write something about good meta tagging and good S.E.O in next hub. Until then... Keep a good work.
It is helpful and interesting. Also ,nice written - concise and easy-to-read for everyone. Vote up!
thanks for being my seo
I bookmarked this hub for future use. Great information, you write the most incredible hubs
Dear Cardisa, according to the ability of writing a quality and useful hubs, you have set up another milestone. If you don't mind I want your advise. I had applied for the google adsense account and it was allotted to me and I got my account active. But some days after the activation, my google account was disapproved. I had never made any invalid click nor posted any of such hub which may be marked as the voilation of the rules and principles. I had made an appeal but till date no response is given. I had applied a fresh application for the same and at this time my application is rejected stating that my hub url as www.aupadhyay.hubpages.com is not acceptable as it is not the original url of mine.
You are, therefore, very kindly requested to guide me in this respect. Please also inform me about the other accounts such as google adsense account to which I can associate with my hubpage url.
Once again thanking for your valuable hub.
Thanks for your valuable guidance.
Good article Cardisa, very concise and clearly explained.

It is so true, what you are saying, When I go back and look at some of those early hubs (3 months lol) I too can see they need updating, Hubpages sure does teach us a thing or two and no mistake.
