Self defense involves everyone in every day life. Knowing how to defend yourself in any given situation could save your life of the life of a loved one. Many people think that self defense is some gimmick or something they see on TV, but I assure you that it's nothing like the movies.

Self defense is the art of defending oneself in potentially harmful, violent or dangerous situations. You could be on a bus, walking down the street or laying in your bed when someone crosses that invisible barrier, and you need to be prepared to defend your space.

In this hub I will just walk you through what happens and what you will learn in a self defense class. Note that about 50% of the physical training has to do with conditioning the body to be able to deal with the physical part of self defense such as fighting an attacker. Some attackers are very strong and you need to be able to hold them off for extended periods. Then there is the defensive combat training which takes you through the process of the fight and finally defensive techniges which defends you against certain situations.

There are different ways to defend yourself:

  • Physical defence is when you train to defend yourself against personal attacks
  • Mental is when you mentally prepare yourself to deal with anything by training to focus and balance your mind
  • Personal safety is when you apply certain techniques to your life to protect your person and belongings such as securing you home and car

Beginner Self Defence

When you start a self defense class the first things you will be taught are - like any other martial art:

  • The creed of the school, what they believe in
  • The titles (how to address each other and you superiors)
  • Name of the items, your training area and your school
  • Commands which are used during class
  • Fitness and conditioning
  • Basic punches, kicks and blocks
  • Defensive techniques
  • The principles of the art

Defense and Offence combat training.

There are two basic types of training:

  1. The defensive - this is where you learn to avoid. Avoid doesn't mean to run away (not in this case anyway). This is where you learn to block, parry, shimmy, sidestep, step back and others. These techniques will give you the upper-hand to go on the offensive.
  2. The offensive - this is where you learn to counter attack, by punching, palm heel, knife strike, elbow strike and all the different types of kicks and strikes.

Techniques

Defensive techniques include defense against:

  • knife attacks
  • rapes
  • grabbing
  • choking
  • gun attacks
  • and of course physical attacks

I will leave you with the 7 principles of self defense

Seven principles of self defense which each student uses to guide them are:

  1. Avoidance - avoid trouble whenever you can but just in case you can't then take no prisoners.
  2. Awareness - always be aware of your surroundings, never let anything take you by surprise.
  3. Surprise - you must never give away your abilities until the last minute. Let the offender play it safe until you strike, let them be amazed. Usually by the time they realize what hit them it's too late.
  4. Aggression - you need to come with all the pent up aggression and anger yo have. Use your emotions and frustrations to your advantage, channel them to make you the victor.
  5. Preparedness - and that is why we train, to be prepared for anything. Physical and mental preparation will allow you to do what needs to b done.
  6. Speed - fast as lightening. Your speed may be your only advantage. Always train as if you are in the fight because the way your train or practice is the way you will fight and if you are slow you may just lose not only a fight but your life.
  7. Determination - here you will to live will play out. No matter how winded or tired you get never give up, the minute you give up you lose (maybe your life).

Self defense principles apply to everything in life. Always remember and practice them. Remeber that not only regular fights or competition requires these principles but everyday people are raped kidnapped and killed.

If someone tries to pull you into a car fight unto the death.

If someone tries to rape you fight to the death.

If you believe your life is in danger fight to the death.

You know I don't know how many of us would be able to go along with it but several women have lived even with serial killers going along with them so that is something to consider. Personally I try to always keep myself clear of any danger and rarely go out at night alone. What a terrible world we live in to be so beautiful. huh?

Great hub subject. People should always beware.

Hi Jackie, yo mean there are women who have a relationship or even married to serial killers? Well sometimes it takes a similar mentality to be with someone like that or they are just plain ignorant to scared to do anything about it.

You are right, we should always be careful but it doesn't make sense living your life in fear.

This is an excellent hub. I took special note of:

"If someone tries to pull you into a car fight unto the death."

I have been told by experts, "never get into the car. If you do, try to crash it into a tree or a curb to get attention." This is one of the most deadly scenarios one can be pulled into.

Genna I am glad you took note of that and remember what you were told. 99% of people who get pulled into cars never make it out alive. I can't stress this enough. Never let anyone pull you into a vehicle or a public restroom or anywhere that they can lock you in.

Thanks for stopping by.

NEVER, get into a car with anyone. Say here's my purse-wallet whatever, but get in and your chances of survival go way down. Rape attempt- push your thumbs or fingers into the eyes and squish em back into their jello brains. Remember too, Bruce Lee was a highly trained martial artist, yes, but he took down other highly trained individuals much bigger and stronger than himself. Your 7 principles are the reason for that as you know Cardisa.

Alastar, you are so right. Never let anyone take you somewhere you don't want to go, especially into a vehicle. It's not size that will give you the advantage but speed, awareness, agility and all the other principles.

Thanks for stopping by my friend.

Lovely overview of the basic elements of self-defense! I'm a fan, especially since I suck at anything BEYOND defense (e.g. offense... heheheh...).

LOL, Simone I am sure you would do great at self defence and if all else fails you could subdue your opponent with humour...lol

After reading this I'm wondering what my next step should be. I've been living with my family and looking forward to living on my own soon. Aren't people who live alone in a new community more susceptible to violent attacks?

OK... Deep breaths

I need to add self defense training to my must-do list.

Hi Loi, it all depends on which community. I would get an apartment where there are several other people on the premises or a house with several tenants.

I know a great place where you can learn SD if you are in Kingston.

As more and more states see the wisdom of armed citizens, the ulrimate protection is a firearm.

Police carry firearms to protect themselves, so why shouldn't we?

Great Hub, Cardisa!

Hi Will, I agree, everyone should arm themselves. I must inject some culture difference with the US and my experience in my country.

(1)Only the rich get the chance to own a license firearm

(2)Firearm holders automatically become targets for their arms to be stole by thugs. A fair percentage of guns used to commit crimes are those stolen from licensed holders

(3)Having a firearm does not deter our gunmen because they have more advance weapons than those given licensed holders.

I know it's a sad situation but I believe learning to physically defend yourself in some places is on even keel to having a firearm.

Cardisa - this is excellent! I also love how you added - if someone tries to get your in the car - fight untill death. I have heard that several times, they say if you are attacked and dragged into a car your chances of survival diminish quite a bit! Love this hub:)

Hi Kelly, I am glad that stuck on you because it is so true and quite a few kidnappings happen when people are nabbed from behind and drag into a waiting vehicle. Not to scare any one but we must always be aware of our surroundings and fight, bite, kick scratch and most of all scream as hard as we can.

Thanks Kelly.

Great hub.. I have always taught to never go to the second place. Meaning if an attacker is trying to get you into a car they are taking you to the scene of the crime. That is where they want to go and have everything planned out. Never let them take you to their playing field. Great hub

Hello Thacker, I am honored to have a fellow martial artist in my hibspace.

You are so right. The minute you give in is the same minute you lesson your chance of survival.

Thanks so much for the support.

Have a great weekend.
