About Page Rank
When I first heard about page rank I had no idea what it was. My mind was totally blank when it came to Page Rank and Google Panda and so forth. I spent months trying to figure out this thing and what I came up with was this. Because there are so many websites with similar content on the internet some have to be left behind while others find their way to the first page. Some of these websites cheated to make their way there so Google devised a plan to eliminate cheaters. But all is not lost as I attempt to give you simple tips on improving your page rank.
You may have heard about SEO and such like, and that bloggers and webmasters used to stuff their content with too many keyphrases, keywords, tags and links in order to get ranked higher especially on Google.
Google decided to change that by changing the criteria for page ranks and so their BIG PANDA UPDATE that had bloogers, hubbers and webmasters running for cover and tearing their hair out because their ranks plunged like rocks in water.
Now, after reading my article I think you should read what Google says about page rank. I choose to go directly to the source.

What is Page Rank?
Let's look at Page Rank - defined.
Did you know that page rank was named after Larry Page? Looking up page rank in the search engines will probably confuse you as you will see phrases link "link analysis algorithm", whatever that means!? Page rank is just a number between 0 and 10 that Google assigns to each link they have crawled to show their importance. I say link instead of website because we have documents, photos, videos and other weird stuff online that cannot be classified as websites. If you turn your PDF file into a webpage and assign it a url then it will be crawled and displayed on the web, but it's not a website.
There are a few factors that determine the importance of this Page rank such as keywords and tags, subject relevance, information accuracy, reciprocal links to other high ranking sites, the amount of sites that link to you, new and updated information, grammar, error free, original content. These are those that came readily to mind.
What is the importance of Page Rank for my Hub?
This might be one question on your mind. You may think that since Google already crawls your page every thing is nice and dandy and you don't need to do anything more. Not so. Page rank is important if you want organic traffic from Google and other search engines.
The more important your page the more traffic Google sends your way. Some of you may be wondering how your aren't getting any traffic from Google, maybe you need to check your page rank to see where you stand.
HP has a page rank of 5 and I believe it will rise to about 7 in the next twelve months as the site improves and less copied and spun content is published. Yes, these things affect the sites rankings as Google is very serious about such things. The more original your content the better the ranking. I hope I explained the rank thing well because now for the tips...........
BTW: Check your page rank here - I find it coincides with what SEO Quake says but I usually use more than one checkers to make sure. So you can also check your page rank here too. Just copy the link of the hub URL and paste the link in their box. Verify by typing the code (they want to check if you are human) and click away. If you are ranked you will see a number between 0 and 10. If you see n/a that means you have not been ranked. Give your hubs two to four weeks to be ranked so check the older hubs.
Tips to Improve Page Rank
- Improve you profile page by giving relevant information about your hubs. If you read up on how to boost website rankings you will most likely see how to improve the about us and home pages. They will tell you that you need to include information about what you offer on the website. The same thing should be applied to your homepage/profile page. I had all sorts of information about me before and was ranking a low PR0 then I changed all that. I removed most of my irrelevant information, cut it to one paragraph so that my hub links could all show up on the page and viola I am now a PR3.
- Many of my hubs are now PR3 even newly published hubs. I am a bit surprised but I have been making subtle changes and improving the titles using the Title Tuner that HP provides. Sometimes while coming back to the hub to reply to a comment, I see mistakes so I fix that. I sometimes come back just re-read to make sure it has no grammatical errors. Google likes that.
- Highlight your main keywords or key-phrases. Even if the hub was published a long time ago you can still spruce it up. Update the keywords by using the Google Adwords Keywords Tool.
- Add more content. Google seems to like a lot of content. I suggest 750 - 1000 words. You can start with 500 then keep improving especially if it's a product that you can find more information on.
- Do you want to get re-indexed? Remove the article from HP. Make your changes and rewrite. Leave for a few weeks while Google de-index you, change your title and make sure you have your keywords and phrases highlighted then resubmit.
- Add photos, a site map and videos. Remember to add key-phrases in your caption.
- Someone had asked about back-links but since Panda and the fact that bloggers and some webmasters were cheating with over linking, Google does not see back-linking as very important when indexing. But back-linking is a great way to get traffic and good traffic sources will boost your page rank.
Good luck with improving your page rank.

Hi Cardisa! exccellent hub and very timely. I particularly like your recommendations regarding our profile pages. Very worthwhile. This truly helps me.
Thanks Maralexa, I am glad it helps.
Thanks for the great information Cardissa. I'll give them a try.
Thank YOU Loi-Renee, for reading and commenting.
My experience:
I have been writing newspaper articles for 8 years and online content for almost one year. I was always ranked at the bottom of page two when I searched my name. (There were so many people with similar names doing lots of things)
Then one day I changed the spelling of my name. Now when I search myself on the Google, at least four top pages will be all mine, my hubpages account appearing at #1.
That's great Vinaya. My name also brings my articles to the fore. But for each article to stand on it's own they need to be ranked on their own merit.
If you type in your profile name all your pages will follow. But if you should type in a key phrase then all relevant content with those key phrases will show up and you might not be in the first 3 pages.
Yes I do understand. When I search key phrase some of my articles appear on page 4, and I think it is better than ranking on page 5. LOL
It is better but page rank is not page line-up. You can have a PR 8 and your website shows up on Page 15 depending on how many websites with similar content. When searching for content there might be millions of related but the most important and relevant ones appear first.
Your article appearing on page 4 does not mean a PR4.
I checked some of my older hubs using the link you have, a few of them are at number two.
Why then are their hubscores so low?
Loi, the hubscore has nothing to do with page rank. Some of my hubs with the highest traffic are lower than those without traffic. The important thing is traffic from Google. I know we all want to hit 100 with our hubs, but I noticed that when I have a hub over 90 and it starts to get some traffic the score falls so I stop worrying about the scores too much.
....although you always tell your story well and offer us a world class presentation with your brilliant journalistic pedigree - I am not interested in improving my hub page rank (I don't make any money here so who cares) but I am interested in one thing: making sweet hublove with you!!!!!!!
lake erie time 7:40pm
Epi, you are such a romantic and I just love when you tell me sweet words and like you just did.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge : )
Thank you Jennifer, for reading and commenting.
Helpful hub. I find page ranking and SEO all rather mind boggling still, the more I read hubs like this the more it's sinking in....I think!!
Hi Debbie, it used to be mind boggling for me too. I also realized that there are fellow hubbers who have no idea about SEO or PR and stuff like that so I thought I would simplify. Thanks for reading.
Thanks a mil for this Cardisa. Great tips here. Checked out Google Adwords Keywords- very cool with the competition, global and local numbers. Its almost funny when you see a great page ranking then go back later and its not so good or vice versa..lol. Appreciate your helpful effort here indeed!
Thank you Fitnesszone, hope it helps!
Alastar, I thought the same thing. I found it really cool to see my hubs that were PR-0 now with PR-3...lol. COOL!
Nice tips. But I can't believe only removing irrelevant information can turn PR0 to PR3, when I've been doing SEO for ages on my websites, just to see them rise to PR 1 at a turtle's pace
You have to remember that our hubs are link to a PR5 site that Google favors so maybe that has something to do with it. Not all my hubs are PR3.
What is a good rating?
Hi WillStarr. A good ranking is 3 and above. A PR5 and above is really good and 7 - 10 is excellent.
Where do we find a list of 'key words'?
Based on the subject/topic you are writing on, you can input into the Google Adwords keywords tool and a list of similar phrases or words will appear. Those are the keyphrases/words for that topic/subject.
The link for Google Adwords keywords tool is above.
Good hub and good information. Hubpages can be a real pain you never know what is going on with score. UP and DOWN.
Thanks Moonlake.
Sorry didn't mean for you to think Up and Down on your hub. I mean Up and Down on my score.
I can't even get a ranking of ranking is 3 on my hubs.
I gave you a Vote Up.
Moonlake, I thought no such thing...you so silly. Everyone goes through the HP roller coaster.
I was thanking you for reading and commenting.
Cardisa, I don't write for money, but i'm sure learning from you. Thank's for all your info....
Thanks Ruby, it would hurt getting a little pocket change every now and then though!
well i aiso don't write for money but i can learn a lot from you
Thank you Munish-rana. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a positive comment.
Hi, this is so useful, I have not really updated my profile for a while, so I am going to have a go later, thanks for push in the right direction! lol! cheers nell
Hey Nell, thanks for stopping by. Google say we need to keep our content fresh in order to keep up there in the ranks.
Cardisa you have barely mentioned backlinks which is all page rank really looks at. It decides the importance of a page by the number of other links leading into it. But because spammers have worked this out, and artificially create backlinks for their sites, Google lays very little importance on page rank now.
Thanks for pointing that out Izzy. But I beg to differ about the importance of page ranks. There are more factors to page rank than back-linking. Relevant, quality and accurate content must have something to do with it.
This is link to article which gives extensive rundown. http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/06/05/google-
According to this content has nothing to do with page ranking. But if that is true, then why do so many sites get slammed such as what Google calls content farms.
Then meta tags are important, but Google does not consider them anymore, yet other search engines do.
Here is what Google says about it. Now they do mention backlinks but as you can see it's not the only factor.
Cardisa: PR is a analytical formula apparently that looks at backlinks. But, to be able to consider what are good and off limits backlinks, it has to be relevent to the content.
If people checked a page from search engine, and checked PR for the first 5 10 sites, they will find those on first page at very top are Paid for spots, they pay to be number one.
The third site can be a PR 2, the 15 site could be a PR 9.
I just saw one of my hubs on first page, yet has a PR n/a.
Getting to the first page is all about Keywords and competition. Knowing how to use KW properly. The miore popular, yet those with high competition, is a tough one to get past other sites. It is time consuming and complicated to figure out, that is for sure.
But we do know, update sites, quality content, not using automated garbage for backlinks for the sake of having them, and the right keywords will push us up front.
But, now I know PR means zip as to placement on search pages, I will spend more time doing the other things, to get out front. Who cares if all of my hubs, artcles, blogs, sites are a PR 10, if they are on page 99 of the search engine results pages.
I'm afraid that all this "SEO" and key word stuff is over my old head.
I have an idea...maybe you should create a website of your own, where we can submit our stuff to you, so you can apply your skills before we publish. It would be worth a reasonable fee.
Cardisa: Among the research that you have done, have you by any chance found information for Traffic sources, such as the free advertising sites, such as Traffic Ad Bar, and others where you only list your URL, maybe a line or 2, and then surf away for points like everybody else.
Now, there are sites where you place text ads which are sent Via email to members such as List Joe.
I cannot find one thing about whether or not these types of sites hinder our sites, blogs etc or not.
Will: If somebody did that, they could make a killing, MAYBE
Linda, yes I have found these sites but they are not very favorable with Google or HP. Traffic Swarm and Diamond Surf are two. I asked in the forums some months ago about them but was advised not to. I also read all of the Google TOS and other agreements and they advised against it too, especially if you have ads running. These kinds of impressions are not real because people dont really read your content.
I don't think I could manage that Will, I am still a newbie at all this. I am just sharing info as I find it. My real passion is non-fiction so when I run out of research I'll just go back to writing stories....lol
Then you have spent hours doing research for all of the information that you share. Thanks Cardisa.
You are welcome Linda. I just wanted to get this online thing right especially since I promised my fiance that I could make a living writing online. This page rank thing is still debatable as people say that PR is not that important anymore. Well I don't know, but since I spruce up my content they have been getting more traffic. Maybe I should change the title to "Simple tips on Improving your Hub page for Traffic".
Cardisa: Sending you a message
PR is important.
Thanks Linda, saw it and replied. Thanks.
Cardisa: The other one is USA only too. Sorry.
That's okay Linda, I know you were trying to help. I joined so many freelancing sites but the only success I found was Elance, have you tried it there?
I signed up, but never did anything for some reason. Then I found WG.
If you want to earn extra you could join my team. I have a team membership. I am trying to get enough jobs so my team mate can earn too. It's just one other person so far and I pay the membership fee from out of pocket.
Let me look at it again first, before doiing something like that.
Great Advice Cardisa!
Thanks Rachelle, glad to see you. Have a great weekend.
Hehe! Love to use PR tools, well- after I got some nifty scores for my blog. Keyword analyses is solid advice, still I write completely without keyword density on hubpages. Blogs are another thing.
Thanks I_Lurk_ThoseCells. Well I figure that HP is great practice ground for this. I have some blogs that I need to work on. Thanks for the approval. I really needed that.
