The New Trend in Religion: Preaching on Buses for Money

A trend has developed in Jamaica where preachers earn their living by asking for money after delivering the word of God.

Preaching on the road, bus or train is not new, neither is begging, but certainly this is a new career as many has given up their day jobs for this.

Mark 16:15 states - He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation."

One is not disputing the right of any evangelist or missionary to preach the gospel on the bus or in the church but one has to wonder about them making it a business. It's like saying "you pay us and we tell you about Jesus". This is of concern to many as people are made to feel that they are paying for the service.

Jamaica is one such place where there are more bus preachers than commuters. On daily basis you will see many males and females who claim to be carriers of the gospel.

In many instances these so called preachers spend the half hour or so singing and praying without one relevant bible verse or discussion of the scriptures. In other cases they quote scriptures in their own interpretations. Some of these preachers belong to a church but many are non-denominational and their service to God and Christian faith is in question.

Preacher on Bus

A personal Experience

Between the years 2006 and 2009 I lived in a particular apartment complex (that's what we call them here in Jamaica). There was a man who was called "Pastor" who lived there with a younger gentleman. At first I thought the young man was his brother but upon further investigation I understood he was not. The young man I will call Sam.

Sam liked me, which led me to believe he was not gay, but by us becoming somewhat acquainted he wanted to get out of his living arrangement and to get married. According to Sam, he was introduced to the "bus type preacher" by Pastor. He was not a christian when he moved in, he was a young man who needed help and Pastor agreed to give him a place to live if he would help him with the preaching.

Not only was Sam expected to go with Pastor on the road to preach but to wash, cook and clean. I will not say that my suspicions were not aroused by the living arrangements but I have no proof that Sam provided other services.

Sam eventually moved out and became a real Christian and got married.

Pastor moved in another young man who did not deny that he was providing private services for the Pastor. There were also instances where other men visited and stayed overnight too. The apartment where the Pastor lived was seen as a gay brothel.

Not only was Pastor obviously gay but also a thief as I caught him stealing a bunch of bananas about midnight, from the neighbor's garden.

I since moved out and have not been unfortunate to meet him on th bus so I don't know what has become of Pastor.

The Conclusion

I have concluded that many of these roadside preachers are nothing more than beggars. They study whatever scriptures strike their fancy and practice to preach in front of a mirror.

There is nothing wrong with roadside preaching but the manner in which you do it or the message of the word needs to be in context with what is happening in the world.

If I want to hear gospel music I'll listen to it on my cd player or the radio. If you are a troubadour then tell us. We do not need to hear your raspy voice singing when you purport to be a preacher.

There are wonderful street singers who bless or ears and hearts with their melodious voices on the buses and public transportation. You the preacher needs to preach. Tell us something we don't know. Remind us of what we have forgotten.

I don't mind giving an offering but don't ask for it. Let the words of your mouth and the message you bring do it work and I guarantee you wont want for bread.

Now you have me preaching!

I am happy for "sam" that he was able to move out and that you moved away from the complex.

Hey Flora, me too. I was surprised when Sam moved, apparently incognito. I moved because I walked out of my doom job and went back to the country.

Hi Cardisa! I haven't seen this much in the States yet, but I am sure it's coming. We have people like "Pastor" as well. Thing is, they do their preaching for money in a church!

Hey Dexter. I know what you mean. many of our so called religious leaders are leading multiple lives.

Trust me Dexter as the economy declines you will find more of this happening. Very soon you will find people preaching on the subways and buses.

Hey Flora, I have been wondering if I should start celebrating because I have been contemplating taking down some of my older hubs that aren't getting any traffic lately. But 100 is in the making, am nervous about it...no idea why!

If i have anything to give, i give it to the Salvation Army, or food pantry to feed the needy. I wouldn't give to any multi million dollar church, or to a preacher who wears expensive suits. i will give to a begger on the street. I've been criticized for this, telling me they will just go buy liquor, my response, " I gave because i felt his need, what he does with it, i can't control " There are many people out there who preach religion, yet, will not help the poor. Thank you Cardisa.

These roadside or bus preachers are not giving to those in need but are beggars themselves. I can't think of another name to call it. Most of these preachers are not living the life of a Christian either, what they do behind closed doors is questionable.

I have been waiting for someone to read your hub and jump to the conclusion that you mean all preachers were bad. And long you didn't have to wait.

Leslie, I have no idea what your comment meant, but I assume you mean that we shouldn't stop the preachers who preach on the street or bus. I agree. But they need to preach so that our minds and hearts can be renewed with the word of God. Their primary mission should be to pass on the word and not begging!

@Flora...I am not so sure what she meant but my words are clear and easy to understand, so if someone misinterprets or misunderstands what I wrote...it's their bad. It goes to show that didn't really read the article.

As a minister who is not paid for preaching, I know the LORD always makes a way for finances and whatever I have needed He always provides. The WORD of God must go out, first in the living of my personal life, then in actions for and with others, then in words. I am involved in a street ministry (9 years now), called SALT on the Street. Many lives have been affected by the teaching of the Word, and by the love of the volunteers who are there on the street every Saturday night, no matter what the weather.

Thank you for your post. I could not imagine passing the hat on the street or a bus for what the Lord has given us for free.

Writerjay, thank you for the comment and the understanding of what I had to say. I really appreciate that preachers are taking up the mantle and preaching the word of God on the streets for not every one who needs it go to church, but the roadside preachers must beware that their actions may prevent souls from entering the kingdom and that is where they go wrong.

I encountered my first bus preacher on a trip to New York. It frightened me at first as I thought he was possessed with a bad spirit. I couldn't wait to get off of the subway. I didn't realize this was a business and a common occurrance. I won't be so afraid next time. The world is made up of all kinds. It is said to read the lifestyle of that preacher in your article as he lived opposite of what he preached. Thanks for the insight. Smile!

Hi Carlon, in Jamaica this is a common occurrence. You don't need to be afraid of them. Thanks for reading.
